Windows 11: Mouse settings escape the Control Panel
More options are moving from the Windows Control Panel to the Settings app. Coming soon: all mouse settings.
Emergency Linux: SystemResuce 12.00 comes with bcachefs support
The Arch-Fork SystemRescue can be used to rescue defective Linux and Windows installations. The update to version 12.00 brings support for bcachefs.
New versions of #Windows might change the UI or underlying components, but they don't change the only thing important to know about Windows: it's nonfree software. Choose software that actually respects its users instead. https://u.fsf.org/3eu #FSF #FreeSoftware
Wow! Windows 386 is so much more usable now in 1024x768 SVGA resolution with 256 colors. Yes, I finally found a working graphics driver! And also "yes", I have nothing better to do at 3am!
@kde@floss.social @kde@lemmy.kde.social genuinely I love the vibe of these KDE screenshots, and I literally work on #windows
Do you think governments should move towards using a Linux distro for computer systems rather than windows?
Please boost for maximum exposure.
Tscheau mit Ö #MSoffice!
That's bad luck for #BillGates' #incorporated #software #monster, but a day to remember for the rest of us. Let's celebrate #APPgoHome day annually and make #Microsoft #Windows drop out next.
Microsoft Patchday: 5 critical Windows flaws, 6 others already exploited
Microsoft is releasing fixes for a total of 57 CVE entries on Patchday March 205. They affect Windows, Office, Visual Studio, Azure and more.
Microsoft hastily discontinues Remote Desktop App
Microsoft is discontinuing its Remote Desktop app unusually quickly. It is pushing for the Windows app, which is less efficient, especially in Germany.
I helped my mother to find a replacement for her *very* old (and partially broken) notebook, and now I have a nice refurbished #Thinkpad T15 (Gen1) sitting here on my couch. It's suddenly this great "shiny new toy feeling" again and I'd love to just keep that machine
Anyways, she told me it should "work exactly as before", so I'll install #FreeBSD 14.2 on it soon. It came with #Windows 10 preinstalled and I just extracted the product key. Question: Is this all I need to be able to reinstall Windows later if ever needed?
I just found out that the NVIDIA driver on Linux simply cannot utilise the system RAM when your GPU is running out of VRAM. Allocations will simply fail.
That fucking sucks.
Windows is apparently remarkably good at managing video memory, so many games simply rely on that and don't take into account how much VRAM is used or available.
Seems like AMD's drivers (Mesa) can deal with this, but I'm not sure.

5 reasons Ubuntu is NOT a go-to replacement for Windows
- Unfamiliar Interface
- Your Fate Is Still In Corporate Hands
- Still Some Minor Telemetry
- Apps Come In Several Different Formats
- There Are Ubuntu-Specific Bugs
Not to say that Ubuntu isn't a great Os for some people (I'm not one of them), but if you're looking for a drop-in replacement for windows, and for a first time Linux user, there are likely better choices.
@nixCraft happened to me like yesterday, AGAIN. That's why i #GAMP5 validate and test everything (important) thoroughly before calling it a success after every major change, like before upgrading to a newer version of a #Linux #Distro or similar. Every time something broke and required #debugging and fixing in some form. We can't rely on anything that once was established. Terrible. yet... still 1000 times better than a shitty #Windows platform.
Microsoft changes the structure of Windows updates
Windows updates are to become leaner and faster from version 24H2. To achieve this, Microsoft is changing the concept of cumulative updates.
Thank you for your talk suggesting strategies for managing data on local file systems.
To all of you that are joining us at @Vivaldi , I would like to welcome you.
We know that many are looking for options away from Big Tech and we are happy many of you are choosing us.
We have been building browsers for a long time now. Many of us were at Opera. I co-founded Opera in 1995.
As Opera drifted in a bad direction, I co-founded Vivaldi to provide a real alternative to Big Tech and I believe we can play a very important role moving forward. Thanks for your support!
